As Oregon opens its Pac-12 season, Arizona State would love the chance to restart its conference campaign.
The two teams play Sunday in Eugene, Ore., as the Ducks (5-3, 0-0 Pac-12) host the Sun Devils, whose conference opener earlier in the week was forgettable at best.
Arizona State (2-6, 0-1) will be trying to emerge from the rubble of a 51-29 loss to Washington State at home, which was ASU's fifth consecutive defeat. The 29 points are the fewest ASU has scored in a game since the 1945-46 season, and this is its worst start since it was 0-8 at the beginning of the 1969-70 season.
"Epically bad," Arizona State coach Bobby Hurley called the loss to Washington State. "Just stunned really by how bad the game was."
The game was poor from the start with Arizona State making 4-of-24 shots from the field and going 0-of-6 at the foul line with nine turnovers in the first half. The Sun Devils trailed 18-10 at halftime.
"That's dreadful. Really dreadful," Hurley said.
Oregon is playing its first Pac-12 game after beating Montana and UC Riverside at home last week following their difficulties in Las Vegas losing to St. Mary's and Houston in the Maui Invitational.
"We needed a win, and we found a way to get it," Oregon coach Dana Altman said after the 71-65 win over UC Riverside, which led with less than 10 minutes remaining. "A lot of things to improve upon, but there's gonna be those games where you just gotta scratch out a win."
Will Richardson followed up his 18-point performance against Montana with a team-high 17 plus five assists against UC Riverside, which made headlines earlier this season at Arizona State when J.P. Moorman II made a 65-foot game-winning shot at the buzzer.
Eric Williams Jr. leads the Ducks with 11.6 points and 5.6 rebounds. He is the only Oregon player averaging more than 30 minutes a game (at 30.8).
With Arizona State's Marcus Bagley out the last five games with a knee injury, (his status is questionable against Oregon), Hurley is using completely different lineups from last season. Remy Martin (transferred to Kansas), Alonzo Verge Jr. (Nebraska), Jaelen House (New Mexico) and Holland Woods (Grand Canyon) are playing elsewhere.
