The Dallas Stars are in position to make some club history. Standing in the way is a Vegas Golden Knights club that's playing quite well at home.
Looking to record a franchise-record eighth straight victory, the Stars also aim to cool off the Golden Knights in their building on Wednesday night.Dallas has outscored its opponents 25-9 over the last seven games. On Monday, Jamie Benn had two goals with an assist and Stars allowed just 19 shots while winning their eighth consecutive home contest, 4-1 over Arizona.
The Stars are 9-1-0 since losing back-to-back games versus Vancouver on Nov. 7 and Nashville on Nov. 10.
"It shows we're doing something right around here right now," Benn, who snapped a five-game point drought, told reporters. "We're playing some good hockey.
"Everyone's contributing, and the goalies are a big part of that. Top to bottom, good team efforts."
Dallas' Braden Holtby made 18 saves Monday and has stopped 82 of the 86 shots he's faced while posting a .953 save percentage during his three-game winning streak as a starter. Meanwhile, teammate Jake Oettinger has a 1.29 goals-against average with a .956 save percentage during his own four-game winning streak.
Now, the Stars take their act on the road for three straight games out west. They're 4-5-1 away from home this season, and 1-2-0 all-time at Vegas. The Golden Knights, who got an Evgenii Dadonov overtime goal to win 3-2 at Dallas on Oct. 27, are 8-5-0 at home after losing three of their first four there.
Vegas won its second straight game Sunday, 3-2 over Calgary at home. Nicolas Roy had a goal with an assist for the Golden Knights, who have won 13 of the last 19 and share the same 28 points as the Stars.
Looking to match a season high with their third consecutive win, the Golden Knights feel they are in good position to string together some wins -- especially with the likes of key contributors Max Pacioretty (six goals, four assists in seven games) and William Karlsson healthy and back on the ice.
"The key now is, when we do have everyone back, to not sit on our heels and say, 'We have our lineup and we deserve wins,'" Pacioretty told reporters. "We've got to keep that same (hungry) mentality."
Pacioretty, a top-line winger for the Golden Knights, has scored four times during a three-game goal streak. Pacioretty missed nearly six weeks after suffering a fractured foot when blocking a shot during the first week of the season and returned Nov. 24.
Vegas' Robin Lehner (3.02 GAA this season), who announced he won't play for Sweden in the upcoming Winter Olympics "for health reasons," made 23 saves Sunday for a third win in his last seven starts. Meanwhile, teammate Laurent Brossoit has a 1.67 GAA during his three-game winning streak and made 32 saves at Dallas in October.
Dallas' Joe Pavelski has a goal with four assists in his last five road games.
