NEW YORK CITY, New York: New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has declared that all employees working in New York City will be required to have been vaccinated against the Covid virus by December 27.
The step was taken following a surge in Covid cases in America, coupled with the emergence of the Omicron variant in New York City.
"We in New York City have decided to use a preemptive strike to really do something bold to stop the further growth of COVID and the dangers it's causing to all of us," de Blasio noted.
De Blasio's term in office ends within weeks.
A mayoral spokesperson said that the city's 184,000 businesses would have to enforce the mandate with their employees.
Some 3.7 million people work in NYC's private sector.
Also included in the new requirements, are those twelve years and above will need to show proof of having received two vaccine doses to be admitted to restaurants, gyms or attending theatre.
Currently only one dose is required for this age group.
